A good wind-breaking vest should be extremely packable while still offering effective protection against the wind. The Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Barrier Lite Vest succeeds on both counts; it manages to keep the wind and rain off you, yet is so unobtrusive when tucked away in your back pocket, you won’t think twice about stuffing in there alongside your pump and gel packs. The Pearl Izumi Barrier fabric is a lightweight, breathable material perfectly suited for the sort of weather changes we often face during a volatile spring afternoon on the road. Made from tightly-woven monofilament materials, the Barrier fabric gives you protection from the elements while allowing your body to breathe and avoid moisture overload. Its versatility is one reason it can be used either as a wind breaker on high-speed descents, a rain protector during flash storms in the summer, or even an extra layer to take along for winter rides, just in case. The vest has been ergonomically designed to allow a layer underneath it, yet at the same it’s time cut close enough to the body that you won’t have excess fabric flapping in the wind or feel like you are parachuting rather than descending down a mountain. Elasticized hem and arm holes give you that snug, secure feeling, and the arm -holes are not oversized so as not to catch wind, either. Reflective elements have been added for post-dusk rides. The Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Barrier Lite Vest comes in Small through XX-Large. It is available in Black/White, White/Black and True Red.

Lightweight vest with one Drawback This is a great lightweight vest with only drawback. There are no vents and so the wind catches in the arm holes and causes the shoulders of the jacket to flap once you get above 18-20 mph. The noise is particularly distracting when descending, and makes hearing cars and other sounds next to impossible. I altered my vest by adding vents with a sewing machine so this is no longer a problem, but be aware of this issue. Otherwise this is a great, light, waterproof vest that packs very small. White color is partially opaque.

Very light This vest is great for using in cold weather and rain. It doesn’t seem to breath well, but it is a vest so this isn’t a huge problem. The nicest part is that it compacts into the space of a 2″x2″x2″ cube, and fits into the smallest compartments.

DELPIT says:

Great Ultra Light Vest Perfect ultra light vest – snug fit on 5-10 145 – collar zips just right – packs to almost nothing – flaps a little after 25 mph, but hard to find a vest that doesn’t
